Puzzle FAQ

How big are Ravensburger puzzle pieces?

The size of our puzzle pieces depends on the shape of the piece itself. Different shapes are created by puzzle noses, and each puzzle piece is also individual in its own shape. Due to the different and individual shapes, the question of a specific puzzle piece size cannot be answered conclusively.

However, all puzzles can be divided into a grid - this grid size depends on the size and number of pieces of the puzzle and is then the "template" into which a puzzle with its individual pieces is drawn.

For a 1,000-piece puzzle, the grid size can be calculated as follows: The side length of 699 mm is divided by the number of puzzle pieces on the long side, 36. The width of 497 mm is divided by the 28 edge pieces on the wide side. This results in a grid size of 19.42 x 17.75 mm. This means that every puzzle piece of a 1,000-piece puzzle can be divided into this grid. Some of the pieces are then slightly larger, others smaller than the calculated grid size due to their fundamentally different shapes.

Our puzzle pieces have a thickness between 2.1 - 2.2 mm.

Why do I only find approximate information about the size of the puzzles on Ravensburger puzzles?

The size information for our puzzles is always approximate, as the final dimensions can vary during production. This is due to the moisture content of the cardboard and the pressure used to press the puzzle together.

Where can I find the production code of my puzzle?

The  production code is a black-printed 8-digit letter-number combination. You will find this on the long narrow side of the puzzle box at the bottom of the blue Ravensburger logo field - e.g. R12345B1 - see example image:

Are there also puzzles with larger puzzle pieces?

In our range you will also find children's puzzles with extra large pieces  - these are marked XXL on the puzzle box. We offer various XXL puzzles with pieces between 1 and 49 pieces, as well as 100, 150, 200 and 300 pieces. The size of the pieces depends on the number of pieces and the age recommendation.

We also carry adult puzzles  with larger pieces.

Why is there a difference between the stated and actual number of parts?

In fact, our puzzles often contain a few more pieces than the number indicated on the box. The information on the box serves to categorize the puzzle to make it easier for the customer to choose the right size puzzle when purchasing.

That's why we usually give rounded numbers of pieces on our puzzles. But there are also special editions such as puzzles with 666 or 555 pieces. Even for children's puzzles with fewer than 100 pieces, the exact number of pieces is often given, such as 27 or 15 pieces.

So it is not an oversight or a contradiction, but we know that, for example, a 100-piece puzzle actually contains 104 pieces.

We would like to explain to you why this is the case below:

Most of our puzzle motifs have a rectangular format because it is the most common in everyday life (such as 4:3 for televisions or 13:9 for photos). The ratio of the long to the short side is therefore 0.4 for our panorama puzzles, but 0.75 for rectangular puzzles.

This ratio determines the number of columns and rows, which is crucial for dividing the puzzle pieces. Since the puzzle pieces should be approximately the same width as they are height, this results in a total number of puzzle pieces that is not exactly 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1000.
