63397100 BRIO World Record and Play Engine Troubleshooting

Basic troubleshooting
  1. Turn off the engine
  2. Close the app and restart your device
  3. Turn on the engine and start the app on your device and establish contact
  4. If the engine is not responding to the app, check the batteries

Installing (and changing) batteries

The Engine requires 2 x 1.5 AAA batteries. Loosen the screw on the battery cover on the back of the engine. Install the batteries according to the illustration (+/-). Close battery cover, and tighten the screw.

My train isn't working

Our advice would be to use ‘premium’ high capacity batteries, rather than standard batteries (well-known brands or otherwise). Standard batteries may work well for light and sound but may not be quite powerful enough to operate the motor or the steam element. We use Amazon batteries, which are highly rated by 'Which', as are both 'Aldi' and 'Lidl' ones too. Using high capacity batteries could make a difference to the overall performance. Please note; alkaline batteries always seem to outperform any re-chargeable batteries.

It also might help if you check the axles are free of dust, fluff and other debris, as this could also cause resistance and put undue pressure on the batteries.

With every new launch of the Smart Tech Sound destinations and tunnels, the engine needs an update, so if the engine stops and has no reaction to a destination it needs an update. Connect the engine to the device, wait for the update and the engine is ready!

My train won't turn on

Please ensure you are using 'premium' high capacity alkaline batteries and these are inserted correctly. Push the 'stop' button on top of the engine and hold for 3 seconds until you hear a 'woohoo' sound. Your engine is now ready and you can drive 'forward', 'backward' and 'stop' by using the buttons on top of the engine.

My train will only go forwards/backwards

Please ensure you are using 'premium' high capacity alkaline batteries and these are inserted correctly. It also might help if you check the axles are free of dust, fluff and other debris, as this could also cause resistance and put undue pressure on the batteries.

My train stops working after a few minutes

Please ensure you are using 'premium' high capacity alkaline batteries and these are inserted correctly. With every new launch of the Smart Tech Sound destinations and tunnels, the engine needs an update, so if the engine stops and has no reaction to a destination it needs an update. Connect the engine to the device, wait for the update and the engine is ready!

Please be advised that the train engine will automatically shut down after 5 minutes of inactivity as a safety feature to stop the train from overheating and to conserve battery power.

How do I record my own sounds on the train?

Customise the play with your own sounds by using the red Record & Play button on top of the Record & Play engine. Push and hold the red button when recording your sound. To listen to your recorded sound, push the button again, or let the engine pass through the orange "play sound" Action Tunnel where it automatically plays your recorded sound.

When connected to the Smart Tech Sound app, you can customise the sounds of the Record and Play engine, choosing from different pre-recorded sounds. Any customisation you make with the app will be saved into the engine, and used into the play until you choose new sounds.

Can I use a remote control to move the train?

Using the app, you can remotely control your Record & Play engine. Connect the engine to the app, and get started! You can now choose to start, stop, and reverse your engine by using the app. You can also choose different colours for the front lights or choose to listen to the sound recorded into the engine.

Please note, when controlling the engine remotely, the engine will still respond to the Action Tunnels in your layout, overruling the remote control, because physical play always wins over digital play!

My train won't connect to the app

This product requires a device with Bluetooth LE.

  • Bluetooth LE Technology is not compatible with non-Bluetooth LE products
  • Smart Tech Sound tunnels and destinations are not fully compatible with older Smart Tech Engines
  • The Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine is not compatible with old Smart Tech destinations and tunnels

Make sure Bluetooth is activated on the device by double-tapping the right upper corner on the unlocked device and ensure the Bluetooth logo is blue (active) and not grey (turned off). If Bluetooth is activated, please switch off Bluetooth for a second and restart it again. When the engine is paired with the device and connected, the green lamp on the left corner in the app is lit.

Ensure the engine is switched on and fitted with premium alkaline batteries. Note: when the red LED light is flashing, this indicates that the batteries are too weak to operate the functions and will need to be replaced with new batteries.

Make sure the device and engine are within range of one another (max. 3 metres apart). If the tunnels are raised, you will also need to raise the engine for it to be able to read the chips in the tunnels.

If you are still experiencing difficulties, restart the app by closing it and opening it again.

Notes
  • The toy is not water-resistant and shall not be washed in a dishwasher. Wipe off the toy with a clean cloth to remove any foreign materials
  • The child's hair can easily get caught in moving parts
  • Other units with RFID (Radio Frequency Identity) can interfere with Smart Tech products. Avoid placing, for instance, credit cards close by. Should that happen, move the engine away from the disturbance and turn it 'OFF' and then 'ON' again to reactivate it
  • If the wheels spin and seem like they have too loose a grip on the tracks, make sure that the tracks and wheels are free from dust. Wipe with a lightly damped cloth
  • Only indoor play is recommended
  • Make sure that your smartphone or tablet supports the app
  • Range of coverage depends on the distance between engine and device. Connection will hold for as long as the green indicator light on the app is on
  • After approximately 5 minutes of inactivity, the engine and the app disconnects. To start up the play again, press one of the buttons on top of the engine
  • The engine needs to be driving in the forward direction when driving up an ascending track
  • It is recommended to turn off other Bluetooth devices while running the engine
  • The BRIO SMART TECH SOUND app is free and can be downloaded as many times as you like!
